This PhD project focuses on the development of high-performance green membranes based on bio-based materials, hybrid nanostructures, and low-impact fabrication processes, targeting industrial wastewater treatment and reuse. The core scientific challenge is to understand the relationship between membrane hierarchical structure (surface chemistry, nanoscale morphology, pore distribution, and interfacial charge) and transport performance (permeability, selectivity, fouling resistance, and stability).

The research will combine membrane synthesis (polymeric and composite systems, thin films, self-assembly approaches) with advanced characterization techniques such as AFM/KPFM, XPS, SEM/EDS, and transport measurements, enabling correlation between nanoscale interfacial properties and macroscopic behavior. Coupled physical models of mass and charge transport will be developed to interpret and predict performance.

Particular emphasis will be placed on green processing, including reduced use of hazardous solvents and improved recyclability. The final goal is to establish materials-by-design criteria for sustainable membranes with optimized efficiency, durability, and environmental impact, aligned with circular economy principles.
